Trying to scrounge up some cash to buy a labtop, 12 hour school days get boring fast. Aiming for 1,000-1,600 $Can with tax/shipping etc. So far the 2 that have been recommended are:

Sony VAIO VGN-FW160DH
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=30540
Processor
Type: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8400
Speed: 2.26GHz
Front Side Bus Speed: 1066MHz
L2 Cache: 3MB

Memory
Type: DDR2 SDRAM
Installed: 4GB PC2-6400 (2GBx2)
Maximum: 4GB
Speed: 800MHz

Hard Drive
Capacity: 320GB
Speed: 5400rpm
Interface: Serial ATA

Audio
Sound System: Dolby Sound Room® Audio

Display
Screen Size: 16.4"
Resolution: 1600 x 900
XBRITE™ Technology: Yes

Graphics
Processor: ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470 with Total Available Graphics Memory of 1530MB (max.)
Video RAM: 256MB of dedicated video RAM
Chipset: Mobile Intel® PM45 Express Chipset
Interface: HDMI™ and VGA out with Smart Display Sensor

Power
Battery Type: Standard Capacity Lithium-ion Battery (VGP-BPS13/S)
Estimated Battery Life: 2.0 to 4.0 hours Standard Capacity Battery
3.0 to 6.0 hours Large Capacity Battery

which is $1350 without the rebates, 1100 with.

VS

ASUS M50VM-B1
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=31525&vpn=90N-SPCA5733377CQL0Y&manufacture=ASUS

Processor & Cache Memory Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9400 : 2.53 GHz,
1066 MHz FSB, 6MB On-Die L2 Cache
Chipset Mobile Intel® PM45 Chipset

Main Memory 4Gb DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SODIMM socket for expansion up to 4GB SDRAM
*Up to 1GB may not be available with 32-bit operation systems depending on system configuration. Intel® Turbo Memory Technology with 1GB NAND Flash(optional)

Display 15" WXGA+
Color-Shine (Glare-type),Asus Splendid Video Intelligent Technology
Video Graphics & Memory NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M G, 1GB VRAM

Hard Drive 2.5" 9.5mm SATA
320GB, 5400rpm

Audio Built-in Azalia compliant audio chip, with 3D effect & full duplex
Built-in speaker and microphone

Battery Pack & Life 6 cells: 4800 mAh, 53 Whrs (included)
9 cells: 7200 mAh, 80 Whrs (optional)

Its around $1530 with the rebate, otherwise closer to $1700.

I know both hard drives are 5400 rpm, cant really change that, if anyone knows of another labtop thats better then these or cheaper and same performance, post it here please.

Just to add, it will mainly be for school work and TF2/WoW etc, and would it be better to buy a 9 cell battery since it the ASUS only lasts for 2 hours on entertainment mode before going dry?

Sony's are crap in my experience. I haven't used one for a while but I'd look for something else. If you're just looking at bang for the buck, I'd look for a Dell.

I'm a huge ASUS (and EVGA) fanboi, so without even looking at the specs.. of the 2 I'd go with the ASUS solely due to a positive history of buying shit from them. Also, like Esco said, Sony's laptops pale in comparison to most other brands -- I also prefer Nvidia over ATI.

As far as specs go, the two are pretty damn similar.. the only (performance) difference being that the Sony has a tiny bit faster processor and RAM.

I don't normally recommend Dell/Alienware, but their laptops are and have always been solid (and reliable). If I was buying one, I'd get an Alienware Area51 M15X. They're fairly cheap -- the M15X is the least expensive of the ones I'd consider buying that are listed on the A-ware site, starting at $1,299.

For playing WoW (Which I'm assuming you are) the ASUS is better. Plus, EVGA/ASUS has a lifetime warranty as long as you register your product. Sony on the other hand has horrible customer service.
